Summary

IIT Madras is organizing the 12th edition of the International Conference on Highly Frustrated Magnetism (HFM 2024) to be held in Chennai, India from 8-13 January, 2024. The HFM series of conferences are typically held biannually and started in the year 2000. These are the pre-eminent and largest meetings of condensed matter physicists involved in the search and exploration of novel states of quantum matter in frustrated magnets. Find more information here.

As established as the field of quantum spin liquids has become in the course of the past five decades, it keeps bringing up revolutions in understanding, scope, and challenges to address from theory and experiment. With the prominent focus on spin-orbit coupling triggered by topological insulators in contemporary condensed matter research, the interplay of spin exchange interactions and spin orbit coupling has become a new angle at which quantum spin liquids are investigated. The theoretical stage is set by the Kitaev honeycomb model as one example where anisotropic spin exchange can enhance the propensity of a system to develop a quantum spin liquid. Multi-orbital insulators, in combination with prominent spin-orbit coupling, provide precisely the setup for such anisotropic spin exchange realizations, as most prominently observed in compound classes such as iridates and α-RuCl3. Going beyond quantum spin liquids which by their very definition are rather featureless in terms of their magnetic signature, modern sources of magnetic frustration also allow to design unprecedented forms of magnetic ordering at low temperatures. This does not only include magnetic vector order of unconventional type, such as incommensurate spiral or non-coplanar order, but also higher tensorial and nematic order, sometimes referred to as hidden order in the context heavy fermion compounds. This field has witnessed a particular scope broadening due to increased accessibility of frustrated magnetic platforms in three spatial dimensions, such as pyrochlore, hyperkagome, and hyperhoneycomb materials.
